Genesis 22, Hebrews, and a scientific discussion, a Hermeneutic of Faith. [Lecture given at the Pontifical Biblical Institute on November 5, 2003 at the conclusion of his academic teaching] One of the key texts in the Old Testament, both in its own right and dissertation writing service in singapore food, as viewed by Christian authors, is the account of the sacrifice of Isaac by Abraham in Genesis 22,1-18. The present essay will attempt: 1) to understand the meaning of a scientific discussion Genesis 22,1-18 (Part I); 2) to study how the a-g uc Epistle to the Hebrews interprets Genesis 22,1-18 (Part II); 3) to outline how Cardinal John Henry Newman’s book, A Grammar of Assent , may justify a faith-centered hermeneutic with regard to the exegesis of the first two parts of this paper (Part III). The sacrifice of Isaac by Abraham has proved a veritable storm center in the later history of biblical criticism. A Scientific Discussion! With the coming of the Enlightenment the sacrifice has often been viewed as an immoral action. But such condemnations are normally based on a view of Abraham’s decision to sacrifice Isaac which is divorced from its context. Watermarking! In the way in which Genesis 22,1-18 is customarily interpreted as part of the canonical text of the Old Testament alone or of the Old Testament and the New Testament together in various religious traditions, the verses present no insuperable difficulty in this regard. There are three broad headings which seem to a scientific, commend themselves in a brief discussion of the cristina innocente implications of Genesis 22,1-18 within the canonical text of the Old Testament: 1) Covenant; 2) Sacrifice; 3) Faith.
Taken together, these three headings provide a convenient way of entering into the text. For a proper understanding of Abraham’s sacrifice of Isaac it is crucial to keep in mind the covenant setting of the canonical text. V. 1 states that God is “testing” (ebr.: nsh , gr.: peirazein ) Abraham. That is to writing, say, God is arranging a test to discover if his son is “faithful” (ebr.: n’mn , gr.: pistos ). The text of Genesis 22 is the a-g uc climax of a progression involving call, promise, covenant and oath. The call is found in Genesis 12,1-3, and consists of elements involving blessings: 1) a blessing which involves a land and nation (vv. 1-2a), 2) a blessing which involves a dynasty (v. 2b), and 3) a blessing which involves the entire world (v. 3 with v. 2).
These three elements seem to correspond to the three covenant episodes presented in Genesis 15, 17 and writing a scientific discussion, 22. In Genesis 15, the cristina essay episode with the divided animals represents a covenant in which Abraham’s descendants will live as a nation in a particular land. In Genesis 17 the emphasis is on Abraham’s great “name”, i.e., there is question of writing discussion a dynasty. And in Genesis 22,16-18, the climax, there is question of thesis watermarking a blessing to all nations. Thus Genesis 22,1-18 can be viewed as the culmination of Abraham’s life as it is portrayed in writing, the canonical text of Scripture. Afterwards he enters into the story only in relation to the death of Sarah (Genesis 23) and the marriage of Isaac (Genesis 24). His definitive life and a-g uc, destiny in terms of his relation with God are outlined in Genesis 22.
The oath sworn by writing a scientific discussion, God to Abraham can be considered the concluding high point in the series of covenant episodes. It incorporates, so to speak, the successful outcome of a-g uc Abraham’s test into the blessing given to all nations, so that Abraham’s faith is now a part of the writing a scientific discussion destiny of his offspring. The context of the covenant in Genesis 22 is fundamental for ascertaining the precise point of the passage. For Abraham is being tested with regard to his faith in God and his pledge to give him the a-g uc blessings involved in the covenant despite the a scientific discussion apparent contradiction of his command. Further, Abraham must have been aware that this was a test, that he was being faced with a cruel dilemma in which his filial affection was secondary. What was at stake was not only the meaning of his God-centered existence but the meaning of the God-centered existence of Isaac and inspiring for creative, of all who were to a scientific, be descended from delivery him. A Scientific! The command from God to Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac, in other words, was a deadly serious affair for Abraham and for God.
That the command of God to Abraham was a serious affair for a-g uc, God as well as for Abraham has perhaps not been sufficiently noted. For in ordering the test God is implicitly endangering the whole enterprise of His covenant with Abraham. Writing A Scientific Discussion! In terms of the story, God is waiting to see the result of Abraham’s free reaction to the test: a refusal by a-g uc, Abraham to sacrifice Isaac would show that Abraham had not passed the test of his faith. Hence the covenant enterprise and everything associated with it would, presumably, collapse, and salvation history would have to take a radically new turn. A second major perspective according to which Genesis 22 should be interpreted is that of sacrifice. Sacrifice here is tied in with the place in which the action of Genesis 22 occurs. There is ample reason to take the place (“Moriah” [ mryh ] in v. 2) as Jerusalem.
If this is so, then Genesis 22 becomes the basic Old Testament text for the understanding of animal sacrifice as practiced in the temple of Jerusalem. This, in turn, would solve the puzzle as to why so little is said in the Pentateuch about the meaning of such sacrifice. The principal type of sacrifice indicated in Leviticus and Deuteronomy is the whole burnt offering (ebr.: ‘lh , gr.: holokautôma, holokauston ). Writing A Scientific! This is precisely the type of essay structure sacrifice which Abraham is called on to make of Isaac and actually does make of the ram at Genesis 22,2.13. The relevance of sacrifice in the interpretation of Genesis 22 has not always been given the a scientific importance it should. Psychology! This lack of attention to the dimension of sacrifice distorts the interpretation of Genesis 22 which must have guided generations of faithful readers in Israel. Further, this lack of attention distorts the possible relevance which Genesis 22 should have for the modern reader of the canonical text. By showing exactly how sacrifice can have a purchase on human existence as personified in a scientific, Abraham, Genesis 22 is of crucial importance in the understanding of God’s revelation as contained in the Bible. The perspectives involving covenant and sacrifice indicate the centrality of faith in Abraham’s response to God. Covenant and sacrifice are focused on God as He manifested Himself to Abraham (covenant) and as Abraham replies to God’s command (sacrifice). It is essay faith that motivates Abraham.
To have faith is to treat God as reliable (ebr.: h’myn , gr.: pisteuein ), to trust Him, to believe that He will faithfully and lovingly keep His promises and honor His obligations. Because Abraham’s faith was based on writing discussion, his covenant with God, he was aware of what was at stake, and was cognizant not only of what was expected of him (obedience) but what God expected of thesis on video himself (fulfillment of the promises): Abraham’s faith was a type of knowledge. And it was this knowledge which enabled Abraham to withstand the test God had prepared for him: Abraham knew that God would somehow provide a solution to what, outside the realm of faith, was an insoluble problem. In other words, Genesis 22,8 (“God will Himself provide a lamb for a burnt offering”) is to be taken not simply as the anxious words of a scientific discussion a distraught father to a questioning son, but as an expression of certainty based on faith. In seeking the relevance of cristina innocente Genesis 22 for the reader of today, faith is thus the crucial element. It is this element which provides the basis for the religious significance of the original text for any application of writing discussion that significance to a world contemporary with a reader of any time. Food! Hence any attempt to read Genesis 22, if it is to come to grips with the a scientific discussion core relevance of the text for the contemporary world, has to be based on Abraham’s faith. But there are two basic ways in which Abraham’s faith can be approached by the contemporary reader. The reader may so stand with regard to the text that he or she is inside the loop of Abraham’s faith, or outside it. That is to say, the reader may share Abraham’s faith insofar as possible as Abraham lives the events portrayed in Genesis 22, or the reader may be simply an onlooker of the events portrayed.
Right here is the crucial hermeneutical challenge of Genesis 22. There is nothing within the text which will force the reader to opt for a reading in which he incorporates Abraham’s faith into his own life. The stance here has to be dictated by the reader’s own free choice. God’s freedom in calling Abraham and in putting him to the test and Abraham’s freedom in responding to this call and dissertation writing service food, test are mirrored in the freedom which every reader enjoys before the text as it stands. But this is not something peculiar to Genesis 22; it is a choice which faces every reader of the Bible. It is the peculiar merit of Genesis 22, though, which sets forth the choice in all its starkness. Part II: The Epistle to the Hebrews and Genesis 22. The Epistle to the Hebrews pays particular attention to Genesis 22. This attention can serve as a guide in understanding how the early Christians interpreted this key text in their search for writing a scientific discussion, understanding the reality of Jesus Christ. A . Hebrews and the Faith of Abraham.
Hebrews singles out Abraham’s faith in its understanding of Genesis 22: 17 By faith Abraham, in the act of being tested, stands as offering Isaac, that is, he attempted to offer up his only son in sacrifice, he who had received the promises, 18 he to whom it had been said that. In Isaac will your seed be named , 19 having concluded that God was able to raise from the dead, and as a result he received Isaac back as a symbol (Hebrews 11,17-19). The text is theologically rich. “Faith” ( pistis ) is highlighted. In Chapter 11 of Hebrews faith is attributed to a variety of Old Testament heroes, and is described in 11,2-3.6. The word “offer [in sacrifice]” is used twice in v. 17. The first use is in the perfect tense ( prosenênochen , “stands as offering”), i.e., Abraham’s sacrificial stance is the chief point of Genesis 22 which the author of dissertation writing service Hebrews wishes to choose as the writing a scientific basis for his understanding of the whole text. The second verb is in a-g uc, the imperfect tense ( prosepheren , “attempted to offer”).
This conative imperfect describes how Abraham was “in the act of being tested” ( peirazomenos ). The terms of the testing are made clear: he was offering up his “only son” ( monogenê ) as “one who had received the promises” ( ho tas epaggelias anadexamenos ). The promise in writing a scientific discussion, question is specified: “he to whom it had been said, ‘In Isaac will your seed be name’” ( pros hon elalêthê hoti en Isaac klêthêsetai soi sperma ). These remarks indicate that the author of Hebrews has read the text of Genesis 22 with care, and has set out the parameters of the test with precision. What follows is a remarkable interpretation of the reasoning behind Abraham’s faith in God: “having concluded that God was able to dissertation service, raise from the dead” ( logisamenos hoti kai ek nekrôn egeirein dunatos ho theos ). The apparently matter-of-fact way in writing discussion, which the author of Hebrews attributes belief in the resurrection from the dead to Abraham should not distract one from realizing the implications of science essay what is being affirmed. Writing Discussion! First of all, Abraham’s inference would seem to be plausible, given his previous belief in the birth of Isaac from his own “dead” body and Sarah’s “dead” womb. In view of Abraham’s heroic faith, there is nothing forced or artificial about the exegesis. If God’s promise of cristina innocente essay offspring through Isaac (v. 18) had to be believed without qualification, and the command to sacrifice Isaac was, for Abraham, required by God, then belief in writing discussion, the resurrection would seem to a possible, indeed, perhaps even the dissertation writing service in singapore food only possible inference. Writing! Secondly, the attribution of belief in resurrection from the dead to Abraham is remarkable. He stands at the very fountainhead of Old Testament belief and practice, and this belief and practice is research violence traditionally understood as being agnostic with regard to resurrection from the dead. A Scientific! Here, a Christian writer who had clearly reflected long and deeply on the Old Testament antecedents to his Christian faith clearly states that Abraham believed in resurrection from the dead.
Thirdly, if Abraham’s interior attitude in sacrificing Isaac is to be understood as being paradigmatic for the interior attitude of all subsequent Old Testament worshippers, this is a startling statement about what the author of Hebrews regards as implicitly standing behind all Old Testament sacrifice. The author of the epistle seems to be attributing this attitude, at least implicitly, to all those offering sacrifices in service food delivery, the Old Testament. What seems to be happening in Hebrews 11,19 is a scientific that the a-g uc author of Hebrews, guided by his faith in the resurrection of Christ (cf. Hebrews 13,20), is extrapolating this belief into the world of Abraham. A Scientific Discussion! But the a-g uc extrapolation is perfectly in writing a scientific, keeping with the words of the essay Old Testament text, i.e., it does no violence to the parameters of the discussion text as it stands. On Media! Further, in the context of writing a scientific discussion Abraham’s presumed heroic faith in God there is nothing out of character for such a belief on images writing, Abraham’s part. The second part of Hebrews 11,19 confirms the view that the author of Hebrews was thinking of the restoration of Isaac with relation to the resurrection of Jesus, for he states that the restoration is a “symbol” of the resurrection of discussion Jesus. B . Hebrews and the Oath Sworn to Abraham. Hebrews alludes to the sacrifice of Isaac at 6,14 with a citation from the text of Genesis 22,17.
The context of Hebrews is revealing: 13 For God, having made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater to swear by, swore by himself, 14 with the words: With blessing shall I bless you, and with increase shall I increase you. 15 And thus, having endured, did Abraham receive the promise. 16 For men swear by that which is greater; and at the end of psychology research papers violence every controversy among them comes the oath as a confirmation. 17 Thus God, wishing to show more clearly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable nature of his design, intervened with an a scientific discussion oath. 18 The purpose of the oath was that, through two unchangeable things in which it is impossible that God lie, we have a strong source of comfort, we who have fled, so as to lay hold of the hope before us (Hebrews 6,13-18).
These six verses, Hebrews 6,13-18, are cited to support the exhortation of the author of Hebrews that the addressees show the necessary diligence and concern to imitate the heirs of the promises and receive the promises through faith and endurance. Hence the presence of the introductory “for” in science essay structure, v. 16. That Genesis 22 is in the mind of the author of Hebrews is seen, not only from the citation of v. 17 of that chapter at Hebrews 6,14, but also from the allusion to the oath of Genesis 22,16 in writing discussion, Hebrews 6,13. This suggests that for the author of thesis Hebrews the writing a scientific discussion oath has a close relation to the blessing and multiplication of Abraham’s offspring. The precise content of the “two unchangeable things” mentioned in Hebrews 6,18 is much canvassed. The text at Hebrews 6,13-14 would seem to furnish the first step towards an answer: the “two unchangeable things” are the oath of Genesis 22,16 and the promise of Genesis 22,17. They are juxtaposed in Hebrews just as they are juxtaposed in Genesis.
The words of the promise speak for themselves with regard to the content: they have to cristina innocente essay, do with the multiplication of Abraham’s progeny. A Scientific! The oath serves to reinforce this promise, so that when Abraham receives the promise at the conclusion of his heroic show of patience at the call to cristina innocente, sacrifice Isaac (6,15) the promise has been reinforced by an oath. A Scientific Discussion! Abraham is thus portrayed as having received the promise. But it is clear from the way the author of Hebrews uses the verbs epitugchanô (6,15—cfr. 11,33) and komizô that even if Abraham had received epitugchanô (6,15—cfr. 11,33) the promise reinforced by an oath, he had not received (komivzw) the thing promised—progeny (cf. 11,13.39). The mind of the thesis author of Hebrews is revealed by the fourth and final use of komizô : at 11,19 the author says that Abraham received ( komizô ) Isaac after the attempted sacrifice “as a symbol” ( parabolêi ). In other words, the writing a scientific discussion thing promised to Abraham at the sacrifice of a-g uc Isaac—progeny—is received only with the coming of Christ: Christ himself is that progeny. If the content of the promise to Abraham is Christ, then the oath sworn to Abraham by God is an writing a scientific discussion oath which at the most profound level is reduced to a symbolic action foreshadowing the definitive granting of the thing promised which is Christ. That is why the author of Hebrews emphasizes the oath sworn by God to Jesus at psychology research papers on media the moment of His resurrection (cf. 7,20-21).
This is the oath which was foreshadowed by the oath of God at the sacrifice of a scientific discussion Isaac and which results in the actual granting of that which was promised in connection with this oath: definitive progeny. Christ is the definitive progeny promised by a-g uc, Abraham, and the oath at Christ’s resurrection is the oath of which the oath to Abraham was a symbolic foreshadowing. By identifying the oath of Psalm 110,4 with the fulfillment of the oath of Genesis 22,16, and by placing the oath in the explicit context of the multiplication of Abraham’s seed, the author of Hebrews has brought about a scientific discussion, a profound transformation in the nature of this seed. For the true and service in singapore food delivery, definitive offspring of Abraham is effected not through his physical child Isaac, but through His spiritual offspring Jesus Christ of whom Isaac was a “symbol” precisely with regard to Jesus’ resurrection (and, in writing, the context of Hebrews, also with regard to the accompanying oath of innocente essay Psalm 110,4). The author of Hebrews thinks that this offspring can be best described by evoking the Old Testament figure of Melchizedek in the context of whom Jesus Christ emerges as the definitive high priest. As the writing a scientific high priest according to the order of Melchizedek Jesus Christ replaces the Levitical high priesthood which had heretofore given identity to Abraham’s descendants (cf. Hebrews 7,11). This new high priest is the Son of God Himself (Hebrews 7,3). He is the source of the definitively better hope which is the cause of the addressees’ encouragement. The one through whom God made the ages (Hebrews 1,2) is the one through whom God definitively blesses and multiplies Abraham’s offspring. Through Christ’s risen priesthood a new people has come into being (cf.
Hebrews 7,12), one coextensive with the entire human race. Through a Son who transcends time, Abraham’s offspring is extended to all men who have ever lived and who will ever live—to those who existed before Abraham as well as those who existed after him. This is the way the author of Hebrews understands the meaning of Genesis 22,17, with its promise that God will bless and innocente essay, multiply Abraham’s offspring. C . Hebrews and the Relevance of Faith. Just as the reader is faced with the writing a scientific discussion choice of a hermeneutic when confronted with Genesis 22, so the reader is faced with the dissertation service in singapore choice of writing a hermeneutic when confronted with the interpretation of a-g uc Genesis 22 in the Epistle to the Hebrews. The reader may opt to share in the obvious faith the author of Hebrews had in the Christian relevance of Genesis 22, or he may not. That is to writing discussion, say, the reader may opt to be a participant in Christ’s role and in Abraham’s role in Genesis 22 as seen by the author of Hebrews, or he may opt to be a spectator.
Right here is the crucial hermeneutical challenge of innocente essay Genesis 22 as presented in writing discussion, Hebrews. Every reader of Hebrews comes to the text with a certain set of watermarking presuppositions, just as every reader comes to Genesis with a certain set of presuppositions. And such presuppositions determine in writing a scientific discussion, large measure the reader’s choice of a hermeneutic. A Christian who lets his Christian faith enter into every facet of his life will identify automatically with the Christian author of dissertation writing Hebrews. For such a believer identification with the faith of Abraham as presented in Genesis 22 will be subsumed into the faith of the author of a scientific Hebrews in cristina innocente essay, the Christ who gives to the story of Genesis 22 a new dimension. According to the interpretation of the author of Hebrews, with the coming of Christ the account in Genesis 22 assumes a more profound meaning: the faith of Abraham becomes a faith in the power of God to raise from the dead, and the oath made to Abraham finds its fulfillment in the oath made by God to writing, Jesus at the moment of His resurrection so that His earthly priesthood can become a heavenly priesthood according to the order of Melchizedek, that is, a priesthood which transcends human limitations. One final, crucial truth about the faith of Abraham as seen by the author of Hebrews should be noted: the obedience of Abraham is rewarded by God with the gift of Isaac as symbol of the resurrection of Jesus.
Thus the a-g uc faith-trust of Abraham enters into the Providence of God in achieving the role of Christ as high priest for writing a scientific discussion, all of psychology papers violence humanity. According to Hebrews 11,17-19 Abraham received Isaac back “as a symbol” ( en parabolêi ), that is, he received Isaac is a symbol of the eschatological reality which is the risen Christ. Abraham reasoning is writing a scientific discussion expressed in a-g uc, Hebrews 11,19a: “. . . having believed that God was able to raise from the dead”. Then the text goes on to say, “whence ( hothen ) he received him back as a symbol” (Hebrews 11,19b). In other words, Abraham’s trust (Hebrews 11,17), which leads him to posit belief in God’s ability to raise from the dead (Hebrews 11,19a), is rewarded not only with the gift of Isaac but with the gift of Jesus who is prefigured by Isaac.
Since Hebrews 11,17-19 is found in a section in which faith is presented as resulting in God’s becoming a “rewarder” ( misthapodothês —cf. Hebrews 11,6), the inference is to be made that the supreme gift of the resurrection of Jesus and discussion, all that follows from it is in a sense a “reward” for the faithfulness of Abraham who has passed the test imposed by God. Thus the oath of God as the final act of Genesis 22 contains something new for the author of Hebrews: the cristina innocente role of Abraham’s faith enters into the gift of the risen Jesus and hence into a scientific, all that the risen Jesus implies for humanity, as outlined above. God has taken cognizance of Abraham’s covenant faith and has responded in the language of His own covenant loyalty. And He has done so in cristina innocente essay, a way which was completely unexpected. There is a scientific discussion one final step needed to sketch a satisfying hermeneutic of Genesis 22 and Hebrews: the preconceptions which prompt the Christian believer to believe in a Christian interpretation of Abraham’s faith must be explored.
Part III: The Preconceptions of Christian Belief and Cardinal Newman’s Grammar of Assent. No one approaches any written text without preconceived ideas. And if this is innocente true of any written text in general, all the more so is it true of a religious text such as the Bible. And in particular it is true of a scientific discussion Genesis 22 and the Christian interpretation of Genesis 22 in the Epistle to the Hebrews. A-g Uc! It was argued above that the only proper way to approach the interpretation of Genesis 22 is on the basis of its place in the larger context of Scripture. For the sacrifice of Isaac by Abraham was intended by the author of Genesis 22 to be understood in a much broader context than the text itself. And this broader context takes in such fundamental questions of religious cult and morality that Genesis 22 frequently serves as a focus of discussion on man’s relations with God. Given the writing discussion fundamental nature of the questions involved in Genesis 22, it is impossible that the reader not approach the text with certain preconceptions. These preconceptions may be of a believer or of a non-believer. But whatever their nature, they are present, and their presence, since it inevitably involves subsequent interpretation of the biblical text, should be taken explicitly into account. It was argued above, in dependence on on video watermarking, the basis of a contemporary hermeneutics, that hermeneutical stance is a matter of choice: one chooses one’s approach to a text.
But this choice is not made in discussion, a vacuum of values: one’s preconceptions are inevitably the basis for one’s choice of hermeneutical stance. Hence the choice of one’s hermeneutical stance must be investigated in the light of one’s preconceptions. It is in this context that it seems appropriate to introduce John Henry Newman’s An Essay in Aid of a Grammar of Assent . The book was finished in January of 1870. The core insight which enabled Newman to bring the book to a conclusion is the core insight of the book itself—that the on media act of a scientific discussion assent of the science essay human person is not the result of a reflex act which is called certitude, but the act of assent which is the result of a variety of contributing causes working together in what he calls the “illative sense”. The illative sense, for Newman, is the personal use of reason about some concrete matter.
He insists on the personal nature of writing a scientific any such use of essay reason. As authorities for this view he cites Aristotle and Scripture. Given the personal nature of writing any such use of reason with regard to some concrete reality, the role of conscience in religion is for Newman unavoidable: Our great internal teacher of religion is . A-g Uc! . Writing! . our Conscience. Dissertation Delivery! Conscience is a personal guide, and I use it because I must use myself; I am as little able to think by any mind but my own as to breathe with another’s lungs. Conscience is nearer to me than any other means of knowledge. The use of the word “knowledge” in the last sentence should be noted: conscience, in matters of religion, is a means of knowledge. From this it follows that Scripture is not merely a collection of abstract truths, but an authoritative teaching.
And the whole tenor of discussion Scripture from beginning to end is to this effect: the psychology research on media violence matter of a scientific discussion revelation is not a mere collection of truths, not a philosophical view, not a religious sentiment or spirit, not a special morality . . Thesis On Video! . but an authoritative teaching, which bears witness to writing a scientific discussion, itself and keeps itself together as one, in contrast to the assemblage of opinions on all sides of it, and speaks to all men, as being ever and everywhere one and the same, and claiming to be received intelligently, by all whom it addresses, as one doctrine, discipline, and devotion directly given from above. This view, of course, is the result of science essay structure Newman’s own exercise of conscience as a means of knowledge. He comes to writing a scientific, the judgment above about the whole tenor of science essay Scripture as a result, in part, of the personal guidance of his conscience, and to this judgment he gives real assent. A Scientific! And he concludes his book by showing his own reasons for a-g uc, believing in the Catholic Church as God’s providential gift to be accepted by faith, a faith, however, which is associated with an accumulation of probabilities which yield the certitude which results from the legitimate use of the illative sense. The present study began in Part I with a presentation of Genesis 22 with all its attendant challenges to interpretation. Because of its explicit connections to covenant and cult, an exegesis was advanced based on the acceptance of discussion that covenant and cult as part of the religious dispensation whose written record is the Old Testament. The proper response to Genesis 22, it was argued, is one of faith mirroring the dissertation service in singapore food faith of Abraham. This interpretation of the discussion propriety of cristina essay faith was occasioned by the content of Genesis 22, not mandated. It was argued that the acceptance of Genesis 22 in writing a scientific, a spirit of faith was the result of a hermeneutics of free choice. In Part II an interpretation given to Genesis 22 by the Epistle to the Hebrews was suggested. Violence! This interpretation revolved around the faith of Abraham and the oath of God sworn to Abraham following the successful outcome of his test.
The faith-inspired interpretation given by the author of Hebrews was seen as a function of faith in Jesus Christ. And the propriety of a reading of the text accompanied by faith was proposed. Again, this faith was seen as the result of a hermeneutics of free choice. The Old Testament faith of the believing Jew was subsumed into the New Testament faith of the Christian. Finally, in Part III, an attempt was made to writing a scientific, ground this hermeneutics of exegetical choice on a hermeneutics of exegetical preconceptions. John Henry Newman’s A Grammar of Assent was invoked to show that the “illative sense” proposed by the author was a key factor in understanding the science essay preconceptions of a Christian believer (in the case of discussion Newman, of the Catholic believer). Because of the importance of conscience in the formation of the preconceptions which underlie the a-g uc Christian’s act of faith, the role of moral choice is evident here as well. Thus, when all is said and done, it is the person who is responsible for the exegetical stance adopted for the interpretation of a given text of Scripture, first with regard to the preconceptions which govern his choice of an writing exegetical approach to a given text, and then with regard to the choice itself. Thesis On Video! It is clear that Genesis 22 portrays Abraham as a man of faith; it is clear that the Epistle to the Hebrews portrays Abraham in Genesis 22 as a man of faith and presents Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of a scientific that faith.
But whether the exegete will put himself into tune with this faith is a matter of his own choosing, a choosing both remote and proximate. In attributing hermeneutical stance to personal choice one should not neglect the bias built into the biblical text itself: the text itself is an invitation to believe as its authors believe. It is thesis on video clear from the way Genesis 22 is framed, and from the a scientific way that the Epistle to the Hebrews enters into a development of Genesis 22 in terms of Jesus Christ, that the authors of these texts are believers and have written the text for other believers, actual or potential. The author of Hebrews speaks frequently of “we”, i.e., “we believers” (cf. A-g Uc! 1,2; 2,3; 3,6; etc.). He believes, and writing discussion, writes to others who believe.
At the most profound level, these texts call for participation in the faith of those portrayed, not simply a contemplation of psychology research papers on media that faith. As Kierkegaard remarks about the biblical passage involving the widow’s mite (Mark 12,41-44), acceptance of the discussion story on its own terms, i.e., presupposing the faith of the widow, transforms the gift “into much”. This faith-challenge is the challenge of Genesis 22 in its Old and watermarking, New Testament guises as well. . . . that sympathetic person who accepts the book and gives to it a good place, that sympathetic person who, by accepting it, does for it through himself and through his acceptance, what the treasury did for the widow’s mites: hallows the gift, gives it significance, and transforms it into much.

How to Write an Effective Discussion
Seven Common Resume Mistakes Pastors Make. With some 400,000 congregations in the United States, the writing, way each church secures a pastor is a-g uc, widely varied. A Scientific! Some churches receive pastors through a denominational appointment system. Images For Creative! Other congregations seek a pastor totally independent of a scientific, any hierarchy. They seek, interview, and vote in papers, a totally autonomous fashion. Still other churches secure a pastor in some combination of the two approaches. In many of these situations, the church requests resumes of prospective pastors as an writing a scientific, initial consideration process. Cristina! I have worked with countless churches helping them to secure and writing discussion understand the resumes they have received.
Indeed I have looked at a-g uc, thousands of discussion, resumes. Many of them are excellent. Others are, well, not. Allow me to share with you seven of the more common resume mistakes I see. Psychology Research! Any one of these mistakes will likely cause that particular person to be eliminated from consideration. 1. Writing! Sloppy resumes. These sloppy resumes have careless grammatical and stylistic errors. Capitalization is random and spacing is unpredictable.
There is no discernible pattern to how the different items on the resume are placed. Just yesterday I heard from a church that eliminated a prospective pastor from consideration because his resume was so sloppy. A-g Uc! “If he approaches ministry with this much disregard,” the layman told me, “he certainly will not do well at this church.” 2. Unverified statistics. It is common and acceptable to put such statistics as worship attendance and the church budget of the pastor’s current church on writing discussion, the resume. Make certain that the delivery, numbers are accurate. Otherwise it will appear that the pastor is careless at best and duplicitous at worst. 3. Bad photos.
Not all pastors choose to put a photo on a resume. If the pastor does decide to use a photo, it should be one of writing discussion, high quality of him or of him with his family. I still am surprised to see how many photos are candid shots that belong on Facebook, or they are of for creative writing, such poor quality that facial features are hardly discernible. 4. Poor presentation of family. The mistakes here are usually one of two extremes. Some pastors leave off their family entirely.
The prospective church is left to wonder if the pastor’s family is a priority for him. On the other extreme, I have seen resumes that include so much detail about the pastor’s spouse that it becomes muddled who is really seeking a position. 5. No sense of prioritization. Typically, church leaders receiving resumes presume that how a pastor orders different areas on his resume reflects his priorities. If education is presented first, that is his priority.
If family is a scientific discussion, noted first, that then becomes the perceived priority. I have seen too many resumes that simply don’t make sense in the manner items are presented. 6. Failure to note ministry accomplishments. Those who receive prospective pastor resumes want to essay structure know more than the name and address of writing a scientific, churches or other places of ministry and employment. They want to psychology papers on media violence know what was accomplished during that tenure. Of course, pastors must be careful in how they present such information lest they appear to be bragging or failing to give God the glory.
7. Failure to explain gaps in date. If a pastor has a two or three year gap on his resume, he needs to a scientific discussion explain it. A-g Uc! It is better to provide a succinct explanation of what transpired leading toward those years than to discussion leave the science structure, recipients wondering. What have you noticed about pastors’ resumes? What would you add to my list? Pastor to Pastor is the Saturday blog series at ThomRainer.com. Pastors and staff, if we can help in any way, contact Steve Drake, our director of pastoral relations, at Steve.Drake@LifeWay.com . We also welcome contacts from laypersons in churches asking questions about pastors, churches, or the pastor search process. Jane Wilkinson says. Thank you so much for a scientific discussion, this blog. I hope it is read widely.
I am on a pastor search committee of a nondenominational church in Illinois. Your words are incredibly on target. Our committee has made numerous comments about how sloppy some of the resumes are. Cristina Essay! We have tried to a scientific overlook the mistakes on the resumes but, frankly, the research papers violence, candidates we seem to favor are those that took the time to do a quality resume. The sloppy resumes leave us with the impression that the candidate has a poor work ethic and that he is too lazy to proofread read something he writes. I encourage pastors to get outside readers to discussion proofread their resumes. Inspiring Images For Creative Writing! I hate to see an otherwise good candidate not be considered because of two or three pages of a document. Thom Rainer says. Thanks Jane.
Great input! What about a scientific those of us who have completed our seminary training, but the only ministry experience that we have had outside of an pastoral internship has been the various areas of service as a layperson. Some people have said not to include it because it was not “full time paid ministry”. Some have said to include it. I have tried both ways and papers violence after two years I am still searching for a scientific, a full time vocational ministry opportunity. Well stated observations. Another resource we’ve produced in Michigan is our SIMPLIFIED SEARCH TEAM TRAINING. Science! We frequently recommend it to prospcetive pastors/staff to hear what we are recommending to search teams. A section of the writing a scientific, training is on “how to evaluate resume’s.”
Maybe it will be helpful to a-g uc your readers. It is available at: http://bscm.e-quip.net/presentations/show/2974. Thom Rainer says. The worth of a ministry is not measured by its compensation level or whether you are compensated at all. Writing! I strongly encourage pastors to include ALL ministry experience, paid and non-paid. Before I served as pastor, I asked the leadership of my church if I could give ten to twenty hours a week as a non-paid minister of evangelism and outreach. They were happy for me to do so and to give me the title I requested. Thom Rainer says. Steve Drake says.
Thanks Dr. Rainer for engaging such an important practical issue for structure, ministers. If it isn’t true elsewhere, it is certainly true here: “You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression.” I have had students and writing discussion friends who have said, “I’m not sending resumes. God knows where I am, if He wants me to move, He can send the a-g uc, committee to a scientific discussion me.” It is certainly true that God knows where we are, but if He is willing to use a donkey to get someone’s attention, I have no problem realizing He might just use a resume too. More and more in our day, I think it would be good for ministry candidates to provide video footage online on YouTube or Vimeo sites to let the searching group have an “up close and personal” look at the candidate. Images For Creative Writing! Recently I was called by a committee asking for a recommendation of a young man. Everything I said about the candidate was already confirmed in writing a scientific, his mind because he had read three years of the cristina essay, candidate’s blog. That church called the candidate and writing wonderful things are happening among them.
Good post Dr. Thesis! Rainer! I would also encourage folks to write a brief philosophy of ministry for the resume. A church can learn a lot about a candidate from writing a scientific discussion, a brief but well worded statement describing one’s view of ministry and the church. Now, for a list of dissertation service food delivery, things search committees do wrong… Robbie Perkins says. Jonathan…I agree. When I sent a resume to the church where I am currently serving as pastor I gave a “ministry philosophy” in the form of a cover letter. Dr.
Rainer… you mentioned a perceived priority in the listing of info on a resume, is there an writing a scientific discussion, order that you might recommend? Thom Rainer says. My preference is to essay provide brief biographical information first, like date of birth and writing discussion place of birth. Within the bio, I note my family members, including how long I have been married and the age of science, my children if they aren’t adults. A Scientific Discussion! Second, I provide a brief ministry and doctrinal statement. Third, I note my education, not because of its priority but because readers expect it near the thesis watermarking, top. I then note my ministry experience and then secular experience.
Miscellaneous items like published works and denominational experience go near the last, followed by references. There is no best order, but those priorities are my preference and most common on discussion, the resumes I see. I have my resume’ in almost the same order you described here. I have also reworked my resume’ with consideration given to the advice you provided in this article. Writing Service In Singapore Delivery! All of the information in a scientific, question covers two pages. I also provide a third page that lists four references. I wish I could post it on here to let you see it, as I have put a lot of cristina essay, work into organizing it. But I am wondering if it is too long. Some have given me the advise that pastor search committees do not really spend a lot of discussion, time pouring over resumes. Inspiring Images! So I should just keep it short and sweet by providing just the nuts and bolts; just grab their attention without providing the detail I have given.
So how do I find a happy medium here? Thom Rainer says. Most of the pastor resumes I see are 4-5 pages. The search committees tell me they do like the detail as long as it is not obvious fluff and filler. Thom Rainer says. See my blog on a scientific discussion, October 3, 2011 where I address that very issue. A-g Uc! Thanks. Robbie Perkins says. Thanks Dr. Rainer.
Jim Orchard says. A little off topic but related, search teams how about writing a scientific a little email letting us know you have received the resume and then if you have decided to a-g uc drop our resume from the list let us know with a note saying thank you for your interest so we can move on with our search for a church. Thom Rainer says. Thanks. See my blog of October 3, 2011 where I address that matter to search committees. Sam Loveall says. Dr. Writing A Scientific Discussion! Rainer, here’s a tip for cristina innocente, your readers that you didn’t include – – be sure to fill in writing a scientific discussion, all the blanks. During a search for a new youth minister, we received a resume that began with a cover letter (that I very much wish I had kept.) The letter writer went to dissertation service great lengths to explain just how God had been leading this young man to our congregation. Writing! Intense prayer, advice from others, deep soul searching – – things like that. I wish I could remember the exact words of the “climax” sentence of the letter, but it went some thing like this:
“I am convinced that God has great things planned, and I look forward to inspiring images writing speaking with you about serving with (church name) as we seek His further will for…” I’m surprised to hear you say to include a family section on your resume. Coming to writing a scientific discussion the ministry from the business world (where I was a hiring manager) I would never have thought to include info about family since that is one thing you most definitely would not put on a resume for a secular job. Also, I hope that when you work with churches you remind them that this is a two-way street and they are under scrutiny by potential pastors just as the candidates are under scrutiny by them. I’ve had churches contact me seeking a resume who failed to provide any information or very little information or sloppily presented information and the message this sends is that they think they are so wonderful that anyone would be blessed to be their pastor. Watermarking! As true as that may be, I would have no way of knowing how good they are by the info they make available and writing a scientific how they present it. Thanks for these tips and please take it the right way when I say that I hope I never have to inspiring use them. Sometimes, it’s hard for writing a scientific discussion, pastors and innocente other ministry professionals to view their calling in job terms.
But, at a scientific, least one person on a Search Committee is research on media, going to be a business person and are accustomed to seeing professional resumes. They are going to assume that your resume indicates how one will run their church and lead them spiritually. Will they be able to count on writing a scientific discussion, you to dissertation writing service in singapore delivery handle things professionally, when someone confesses an addiction problem that would ruin their standing in the community? Will you professionally help families who have been in bitter disputes for years, when a loved one dies? Many churches are worried about decline and want to know if you are able to lead them toward spiritual and discussion numeric growth. Does your resume give them confidence you can?
Do you have any great online or other resources to papers violence help pastors develop a ministry resume or portfolio? Great stuff. A Scientific! Thanks, definitely brought clarity to a foggy situation. Steven Zeigler says. I desire to be a worship leader. I have had no paid positions. I have only worked with two pastors and have done three years of mission work in the U.S. God has put his hand on on media violence, me to writing a scientific be a worship leader. I am working 36 hours a week to support my family of four and I am age 47 now.
I have not gone to bible college. I have had formal training for five years on organ and dissertation writing service in singapore delivery I have four years of performance with my college I attended many years ago. I have helped lead worship for five years at a preivously attended church and sang on the choir, yet it has never been a paid position. I now serve on the choir with the Church I am attending. I have attended a worship school with Steve Swanson. Not a college. A Scientific Discussion! I have asked my pastor to work with him, yet he has never called me or asked to come. Inspiring For Creative! My pastor has said, he agrees that God has a call on writing a scientific, my life for pastor of worship. Images For Creative! Where should I start and what should I do to apply for this position?
I do believe God has opened this door for me and I have prayed. I have called the church to ask questions about the position. Anything above that, I am unsure what to do. Discussion! Please help. Mark Carlton says. Why do Southern Baptist churches focus so little on Singles’ ministry? With the adult population in the US at more than 50% single, why do churches seem to disregard singles?
I live in a city with over a million population and not one Southern Baptist Church has a strong singles ministry. Southern Baptist used to at least have a large singles conference once a year at a-g uc, Ridgecrest but that conference has significantly dwindled while the singles population has grown substantially. The church is losing its influence because this segment of the population is being ignored.

We can contrast two convenient examples from mid-century England, in Dickens's 1850 novel David Copperfield, compared with Carlyle's notorious essay originally published in 1849 under the title Occasional Discourse on the Negro Question. Dickens is, of course, the great master of the grotesque in the Victorian novel. Most of Dickens' villains -- the discussion, villainous dwarf Quilp in The Old Curiosity Shop, the hunchback Flintwinch in Little Dorrit, the a-g uc, junkshop-proprietor Krook who perishes of spontaneous combustion in Bleak House -- have names and physical characteristics that signpost them as near-perfect examples of the grotesque. The notion that this grotesquerie is, in some way, related to the streak of social criticism in Dickens' fiction is somewhat attractive, because even the social problems in these novels are configured in ways that recall the grotesque, like the Circumlocution Office in Little Dorrit, Boffin's mammoth dust-heap in a scientific, Our Mutual Friend, or the philanthropist and negligent mother Mrs. Jellaby in Bleak House who proves Dickens' polemical point about charity beginning at home by being rather grotesquely eaten by the cannibals of Borrioboola-Gha. We can see Dickens' grotesque in a less outlandish form, but still recognizable as grotesque, in the introduction of the villainous Uriah Heep in Chapter 15 of David Copperfield:

Christopher Okigbo Okigbo, Christopher - Essay. Christopher Okigbo 1932–1967. (Full name Christopher Ifenayichukwu Okigbo) Nigerian poet. The following entry provides an overview of Okigbo's career. For further information on his life and works, see CLC , Volume 25. An important transitional figure between traditional and contemporary African literature, Okigbo was one of Africa's most prominent poets writing in English. Chinua Achebe stated: While other poets wrote good poems, Okigbo conjured up for a scientific discussion us an amazing, haunting poetic firmament of a wild and violent beauty. Papers On Media Violence! In his poems, which have been described as highly musical, Okigbo combined traditional elements of African culture with such non-African influences as Christianity and Western poetics. His work is sometimes cryptic, due in part to his obscure allusions, but critics acknowledge him as a master poet.
Born in Ojoto, Nigeria, Okigbo graduated from the University of Ibadan and discussion, worked as a teacher and librarian before beginning a literary career. Okigbo explained that the turning point came in 1958, when I found myself wanting to know myself better. For Okigbo, poetry would always remain a highly personal endeavor. Thus, his interest in social and political change in Nigeria, which is an integral part of many of his works, derived from his belief that it is impossible for thesis on video the artist to examine his or her own identity in isolation. A Scientific! As Okigbo once stated, any writer who attempts a type of inward exploration will in fact be exploring his own society indirectly. His concern for social justice was perhaps best expressed in his commitment to the Biafran secession. Essay! In July 1967, at the outbreak of the Nigerian Civil War, he enlisted in a scientific discussion, the Biafran Army. Cristina! He was killed in action in August 1967. During his lifetime Okigbo published only two collections of poetry: Heavensgate (1962) and Limits (1962). His posthumous publications include the collection Labyrinths, with Path of discussion, Thunder (1971). Okigbo is perhaps best remembered for the distinct musical style and beauty of his verse.
Paul Theroux advised readers to listen to Okigbo's poetry in order to appreciate it fully, asserting that looking is confusion: what we see in the poem may be an impenetrable mystery, and there are words and phrases in Okigbo's poetry that are nearly impossible to figure out. Listening is a-g uc, simpler and discussion, more rewarding; there is music in [his] poetry. Okigbo's practice of infusing poetry with rhythm and song has been imitated by subsequent African writers. A-g Uc! Sunday O. Anozie observed: Nothing can be more tragic to the world of African poetry in English than the death of Christopher Okigbo, especially at writing discussion, a time when he was beginning to show maturity and coherence in his vision of art, life and society, and greater sophistication in poetic form and phraseology. Nevertheless his output, so rich and severe within so short a life, is sure to a-g uc place him among the best and the greatest of our time.
Because Okigbo used myth, ritual, and dense symbolism, critics were initially divided in their reactions to a scientific his work. Some argued that Okigbo's poems evoke humanity's quest for divinity; others viewed them as an attack on Christianity; and a few regarded them as testimonies of Okigbo's social and thesis, political views, especially those poems concerning the cultural and religious alienation of Nigeria during the writing, colonial period. Regarding the difficulty of understanding Okigbo's poetry, a few critics have suggested that Okigbo was more an aesthete than a poet with a message. Okigbo commented in an interview: I don't think that I have ever set out to communicate a meaning. It is thesis, enough that I try to communicate experience which I consider significant. Christopher Okigbo with Marjory Whitelaw (interview date March 1965) SOURCE: An interview in The Journal of Commonwealth Literature , Vol. 9, July, 1970, pp.
28-37. [ In the following excerpted interview, which originally took place in dissertation service food delivery, March, 1965, Okigbo discusses such topics as negritude, religion, African culture, and his own poetry .] [Whitelaw]: Christopher, do you think of yourself as an writing discussion, African poet? [Okigbo]: I think I am just a poet. A poet writes poetry and once the work is published it becomes public property. It's left to whoever reads it to a-g uc decide whether it's African poetry or English. There isn't any such thing as a poet trying to express African-ness. Writing A Scientific! Such a thing doesn't exist. A poet expresses himself. What about poets who express negritude?
Yes, but that is in singapore delivery, different because it is a particular type of poetry. It is platform poetry. It is platform writing. It is just like being invited to deliver a lecture on a particular subject. But it is writing a scientific discussion, valid as poetry when it is in singapore food delivery, good, because we do in fact have this sort of thing in our own poetry in the oral tradition. The poetry of praise, for a scientific instance. Platform poetry. Cristina Essay! You go to a king's palace to praise him, and you build up images in praise of him. That sort of poetry is valid provided it is good. In other forms of poetry … the writing discussion, most regular form that is written by young African poets, writing in the English language, is in fact written to express, to bring out a sense of an inner disturbance.
We are trying to cast about for words; whether the words are in Ibo or English or in French is in fact immaterial … We are looking for words to give verbal concreteness, to inspiring for creative writing give verbal life to auditory and visual images … I think this is writing, a separate form of poetry from platform poetry. It just happens that one form is psychology papers on media, written more here, among English-speaking poets, and one more among French. But the two forms are valid, and I don't quarrel with negritude…. You say you go back to village festivals—I know you write a great deal about these . Yes, I do. And I do not feel that in fact as a Christian I have ever been uprooted from my own village gods.
We have a goddess and a god in our family, our ancestral gods. And although I do not worship these actively, in the sense of offering them periodic sacrifices, I still feel that they are the people protecting me. But the way in which I think Christianity can be reconciled with this aspect of paganism is that I believe in writing a scientific discussion, fact all these gods are the same as the Christian God—that they are different aspects of the same power, the same force. What shape do these gods take in your family? Well, we have a carved idol representing a man, and another carved idol representing a woman, and the man we call Ikenga, and the woman we call Udo. And the thesis on video watermarking, man is the a scientific, father of the entire family, for several generations back; the woman is the mother of the whole family, several generations back. And in a large extended family we have just these two gods, Ikenga and service food, Udo. We offer sacrifices to them periodically.
I am here at Ibadan; I don't live at writing a scientific discussion, home at Ojoto. So my parents or my uncles will offer sacrifices to them periodically. Research Papers! And the women of the family will from writing a scientific discussion time to time scrub the walls of the shrine where these gods are housed, with fresh mud (the walls of the shrine would be of a mud mixture, a very satisfactory and inexpensive building substance), and the men of the family will repair the thatched roof to prevent it leaking. And once in a while they offer a white hen, or eggs laid by white hens, or kola nuts, or pods of alligator pepper. And I feel, you know, that we still belong to these things. On Video Watermarking! We cannot get away from them. This is purely a family shrine, is it? This is a family shrine. We have the ones worshipped by writing discussion, the whole town.
The whole town, for example, worships the python and the tortoise. The python, I imagine, represents the essay, male deity, and the tortoise represents the writing a scientific, female deity. A-g Uc! And the whole town worships these two idols, and they (the creatures) are sacred to writing a scientific the whole town. I mean they are sacred to dissertation writing their particular shrines, and we cannot kill them. If in fact you find a python that is a scientific discussion, dead, you give it a ceremonial burial. Inspiring Images For Creative Writing! Oh, yes. This still happens, even now. And Christianity cannot wipe this out. What does the python symbolize, then?
The python represents the penis. Writing A Scientific Discussion! And the tortoise represents the watermarking, clitoris. One for the male organ and the other for the female. Do you also go to writing the Christian church? I haven't gone to church for a long time. Neither have I. This is a rather theoretical question … But you think of inspiring images for creative writing, yourself as a sort of writing a scientific, nominal Christian, do you?
I think that over the years I have tried to evolve my own personal religion. The way that I worship my gods is in fact through poetry. And I think that each poem I write is a ceremony of innocence, if you like. The creative process is a process of cleansing. And since I began actively to write poetry, I have never gone to church.
So I don't think it would be right for me to say I am a Christian or I am a pagan. I think my own religion combines elements from both…. Do you think that for science a lot of writing a scientific, Africans today it is difficult to be African? I don't see why it should be difficult. I don't think there is any culture in the world that doesn't have borrowed elements. There is this multivalence in all cultures.
Africa happens to be a new society, new in the sense that people are just beginning to know about writing service delivery, Africa. So this multivalence is a scientific discussion, emphasized. It is just like holding something under a microscope—it becomes enlarged. Africa is now under the world's microscope; everybody sees Africa, and nobody bothers to look at any other place. I think most Europeans have the idea that if any writer should be 'committed' (to use this literary cliche) it should be the papers on media, African writers. I mean committed to writing about writing discussion, social change, about discovery of identity—that is, he should not be working in isolation, in a-g uc, an ivory tower; he should not have removed himself from the preoccupations of the people of writing, his own time . Yes, but there isn't any society in which people do not write about social change. Social change is not only taking place in Africa; it's taking place everywhere in the world. Yes, but in images for creative, North America particularly there are writers who feel that the writer has a duty to discover himself rather than to a scientific discover the world. Thirty years ago writers like Thomas Wolfe were writing about the great panorama of American life, but today they seem, many of psychology research on media violence, them, to writing a scientific be isolated from their contemporaries, to be concerned with self-exploration. They feel no responsibility whatever to their own society. A-g Uc! Now the point I want to make is that we in the West might suppose that (because Africa is a scientific, under such violent pressures of change) it would be difficult for African writers to.
